Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that Prof. dr. G.W. (Eddie) Barendsen died on June 20, 2018.

Eddie was born in Groningen in 1927 and received his doctorate on age determination with radioactive carbon at the University of Groningen in 1955. He was an extraordinary professor of radiobiology from 1970 to 1987 and from 1992 ‘ordinary’ professor of radiobiology at the University of Amsterdam. He was also the Head of the Laboratory of the Radiotherapy Department of the AMC, later LEXOR. Among others, he popularized the LQ model, which is used by all radiotherapists to calculate the fractionated radiation therapy schedules.

Eddie has remained scientifically active well into his old age; he published his latest publication in 2016, at the age of 89. Until 2017, he remained a member of the NVRB.

The board of the NVRB wishes his family and friends all the strength to process this great loss.
